Situated in Magheramore, a townland of Oughterard and the gateway to the wild beauty of Connemara is the studio of Cheryll Kinsley Potter.

Cheryll is a successful professional artist and exhibits her work widely.  She is an experienced and accomplished teacher, imparting her extensive knowledge and skills in the many aspects and techniques of painting and drawing to her enthusiastic pupils.

Cheryll is at ease with both adults and children. There are spaces for 6 pupils in each class. The classes are always of mixed ability and each technique is explained and demonstrated for those who are starting out, reinforcing advice for those who have been painting for some time.

The term starts with an exercise for all to complete before embarking on a subject of individual choice, suggested or advised if necessary. There is an in-house state of the art scanner and printer to aid composition and a well stocked library of art books.

The classes for adults are of 2 ½ hours duration of which the first hour is painting, followed by a ½ hour tea and coffee break and finally one hour of painting to finish. Most projects take up to 4 weeks to finish and a pupil can take home at least three works of art in a term. Children’s classes are 1 hour for pupils aged 7-10 and 1 ½ hours for pupils aged 10-14. Cheryll can give grinds for pupils who need extra help with exam work and will give portfolio courses for pupils wishing to apply for college courses.

Gentle background music is played throughout the duration of the class as an aid to relaxation. The atmosphere is informal and friendly and Cheryll quite often paints along with the class herself, which is always interesting and informative.

Cheryll also teaches visitors to Connemara who want a one off experience of painting whilst their partners are enjoying the other pursuits that Oughterard offers, fishing, golf, walking and pony-trekking.

Equipment
The studio is well equipped for oil painting, water-colour and egg tempera. There is special daylight lighting and the studio is heated and has good ventilation. Aprons are provided and it is recommended that pupils wear sensible clothing for painting as staining may occur.

Fees
Adults fees are €30 per class and may be paid in blocks of 10,  €300 or €150 or in special circumstances may be paid per class.

Children’s fees are € 15 per class for the 7 -10 year olds and €20 per class for the 10-14 year olds and are payable per class attended but can be paid in blocks of 5 or 10.
