The Aran jumper/sweater takes its name from the Aran Islands, situated off the West Coast of Ireland. Aran women had always been knitting fisherman’s
jerseys, or 'ganseys', as islanders call them, to help
their husbands and families weather the often-treacherous
island conditions.

On an old Franciscan Monastery in Roundstone which is a small coastal
village and a 45 minute drive from Oughterard was developed by the
Industrial Development Authority, Malachy Kearns, better known as
Malachy Bodhrán amongst folk musicians, works at his craft of making
Ireland's oldest product the Bodhrán (Bow-Rawn). It is an 18" one sided
drum made from Goatskin treated by a traditional process.

Kirk Castle - Castle of the Hen (Caislean-na-Circe) (Hill of Doon, Glann Rd., Oughterard) Between Maam and Doon, Lough Obsen's (Lake Corrib's) deep, sometimes ominous waters flow, free from islands except for the rock on which the ancient Hen's Castle of the O'Connor's and the O'Flaherty's stands. The Lord Justice, in 1225, caused Odo O'Flatherty to give up Kirk Castle to Odo O'Connor, King of Connaught; for assurance of his fidelity. |

Connemara National Park  Situated near Letterfrack, and close to Kylemore Abbey the Park covers some 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of scenic countryside, rich in wildlife, on the slopes of the Twelve Bens.
